What is an Effective Rate?

Your effective rate is the single most important metric for understanding your credit card processing costs. It's your total monthly fees divided by your monthly processing volume.

Formula: (Total Monthly Fees ÷ Monthly Volume) × 100 = Effective Rate %

Example: $1,200 in fees ÷ $40,000 volume = 3.0% effective rate

Unlike your quoted rate (which only covers one component), your effective rate includes:

  • Interchange fees (set by Visa/Mastercard, typically 1.5-2.5%)
  • Assessment fees (card network fees, typically 0.13-0.15%)
  • Processor markup (your processor's profit)
  • Monthly fees (statement fees, PCI compliance, gateway fees)
  • Per-transaction fees (authorization fees, batch fees)

Why Effective Rate Matters

Many processors advertise low rates but hide fees in fine print. Your effective rate cuts through the marketing and shows you exactly what you're paying—making it the only fair way to compare processors.

Industry Benchmarks

Use these benchmarks to evaluate your effective rate. Keep in mind that your transaction mix (card-present vs. card-not-present, debit vs. credit, rewards cards) significantly impacts your rate.

Card-Present (Retail, Restaurant)

Excellent:2.0-2.5%
Good:2.5-3.0%
Fair:3.0-3.5%
Poor:3.5%+

Card-Not-Present (Online, E-commerce)

Excellent:2.5-3.0%
Good:3.0-3.5%
Fair:3.5-4.0%
Poor:4.0%+

Keep in mind: These ranges assume a typical transaction mix. If you process mostly rewards cards, AMEX, or international cards, expect rates 0.2-0.5% higher. B2B or large-ticket transactions may also see higher rates.
